This week, I have been on Corn Island while Kim has stayed back in Bluefields with the house and the dogs. I needed to speak several times through this whole week, so we decided together to have me go alone.
I have been staying at the mission house next to the church. It has given me a lot of time to study and work on other projects.
The island is truly beautiful, but to be honest, I have spent almost no time outside. It is kind of like when we lived next to the lake in Rowlett. Did not spend much time looking at that either.
This past week the regional baseball championships concluded in Bluefields, and the team from Corn Island won the championship game over Bluefields, 2-1 in extra innings.
The people from Corn Island were ecstatic, because it is the first time in the 58 years of the championship that they have won the tournament in Bluefields. As always there was the standard parade that is so common here with all the trucks honking.
The schedule has been full of speaking opportunities this week. I spoke at church on Palm Sunday, Wednesday prayer meeting, Good Friday service, Saturday radio show and Easter Sunday. There are a lot of tourists on the island during Holy Week and the attendance at church also jumps.
I had a good chance to go with Jorge and Emma Morgan to their home on a secluded end of the island to watch the moon come up over the ocean and discuss the youth center project.
It was a special experience just being there and seeing the beauty of creation and feeling the breeze and watching the moon. I did not want to leave. You can look at more pics in the gallery.
As soon as he has completed the land purchase (hopefully soon), he will have the property surveyed and will be ready for the design phase of the project. Soon we will be soliciting volunteers to come and work on various phases of the project, and enjoy the beauty of the island.
As this project is built and proves viable, the goal is to then take the idea to other areas on the mainland and duplicate it there. Jorge and Emma and I discussed this and Jorge thought it was a great idea.
As the project is built, my greater burden and vision is to develop a spiritual renewal among the men of the island, but it WILL NOT happen within the context of the local church. The men have largely abandoned church and religion. My goal is to get 100 men who will get together every month over a pancake breakfast or whatever so we can discuss the project and plant seeds of spiritual renewal.
I think that most of the churched people around here don't believe it can happen, but I believe that it MUST happen. Pray for us in this regard. The incredible beauty of this island masks the huge problems among the youth and the families.
Thank you as always for your prayers.
God bless you,
Tim and Kim |
